How would I go about starting to train and be allowed to climb Mount Everest?

I want to climb Everest (3 year plan from training to actual climbing). I've read a lot of information, one note in particular said that I should be able to run 10 km per day. But ...show more

Tim is right about the requirements, but either way, do you think it is smart to attempt the highest peak in the world without any climbing experience??? I would like to add that I would STRONGLY recommend you look into other climbs. There is nothing special about Everest other than that its summit is highest above sea level. This isn't as special as it sounds, either. Everest is not the largest mountain (in terms volume of rock) nor is it the highest mountain from base to summit. Mt. McKinley in Alaska takes the prize on this feature, which really constitutes the "biggest mountain" in my opinion. More importantly, Everest is FAR from the most interesting or beautiful climb out there. Unfortunately Everest has become a place littered with trash and covered in inexperienced climbers with lots of cash getting corralled up the mountain on fixed lines by guides. I think you would have just as much, if not more fun on a climb of Mt. McKinley or Mt. Rainier, and it would cost you about 5% of what it costs to climb Everest. It is going to cost AT LEAST $60,000 to climb Everest, but I bet $100k is a more realistic estimate.

Allowed? You don't need any special training or skill to be allowed to climb Everest. You just need the money to hire a guide and pay the permit fee. Some guides will insist that you have a long climbing resume, others will require no experience at all. There are a handful of people where Everest has been their very first climb. You can read about them in your book. I think it was a group of Koreans that didn't know how to use their crampons. Also, Everest is not considered a technical climb at all. But it is physically demanding. Lack of air is a big part of the struggle. I was there to summers ago, and just trail running at the base camp elevation was exhausting.
