  • Answer:

Exit Texas on US 380 west into New Mexico. Before descending Pecos River Valley turn left at NM 409. Follow sign directions to 545 Bottomless Lakes Road into State Park. Park campground had little more than showers, lavatory, shade shelters, fire pits, and some hiking trails. Lakes are cliff walled, gypsum with rattlesnake infested fissures, some of which were wiggled into by writer more than 40 years ago. I met the Roswell Fire Dept. rescue divers who pull out the dead and injured swimmers. Lakes are deep enough to have thermocline's with water so cold at bottom it slows decay of dead flesh. My siblings were boating at the park when a dead person floated up. They were told the victim had last been seen in a different lake. There's rumor a underground river links gypsum held water from mines outside Artesia north to Santa Rosa or east under Texas. Gypsum caves do exist. If returning to Texas go visit the Bureau of Land Management Mescalero Sands ORV recreation area south of US 380 before leaving New Mexico. ORV use of caprock rise eastward of dune area is unknown, suggest local inquiry. Also suggest confirmation from NM Tourism on B.L.S.P. camp and lake issues.
