  • Answer:

You will be hard pressed to find that kind of solitary wilderness within an hour from Baltimore and DC, one of the more densely populated parts of the country. There is no "deep woods" around the metro region. All the area around you is either privately owned or under government control. Renegade camping on private land can get you in trouble, even if you can find any. Unless you are willing to backpack into a trail like the Appalachian Trail or in the mountainous backcountry in Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia, you will have to accept camping within earshot and sight of others. If you are willing to backpack into woods a ways you need to drive 3 or 4 hours to get to decent backcountry from where you are. I would suggest the Blackwater Falls State Park area in eastern WV. Lots of trails in that region and not as crowded as Shenandoah National Park in VA. There are also some nice wilderness regions in central PA, but those are also 3 to 4 hours drive.
