The San Gorgonio wilderness, best campground with fishing-South fork on the Santa ana river. This is a first come/first served campground arrive by thursday night to get a spot. You will need to travel more than one hour to experience designated wilderness areas in California. Dispersed camping in the National Forests is what you should be exploring. There are too many designated wilderness areas in California for me to list, so I provide you with a link to a list.
