Where to go wilderness camping (not at a campsite) near Chicago Illinois.?

    I am really glad to see that more people are starting to venture out into the real wilderness. I don't think that I will be much help though as I live on Vancouver Island in Canada. I have been a wilderness guide and survival teacher for about 20 years and the best advice I can give you is make sure you are fully prepared. do not always rely on electronics to guide you and try some of the older methods like making a fire without matches. or try to build another form of shelter if it is nice out. There is nothing better than sleeping under the stars on a nice night. I hope you have a great time and if you are ever looking for some great spots to camp Canada is full of them. L8TR

You can search at this link for campsites all across the country. Like another poster said, The Hoosier National Forest in Indiana is great, but its a pretty long drive from Chicago. http://www.recreation.gov/

Live to Fish

I don't know about your state, but mine has public hunting grounds that you can camp on. Check and see if there is a place that has primative camping in your state.
