  I recently moved to this area and we have been looking for places to camp. It just sucks for camping in SoCal, there is no way around it. We are used to camping in Yosemite or Huntington Lake area, so this is a big change for us. We don't like Big Bear, it's aweful and I don't know how people call that nature. We did like Anza Borrego, it was beautiful area to camp outside of Borrego Springs near the desert palm Oasis but its best to camp there in the spring or fall, much too hot in the summer. We also really like San Jacinto near palm springs, and we will be camping at the Marion Mountain Campgrounds this weekend (it will be our first time, I hope its nice). If you are looking for a place very close to Riverside, Lake Arrowhead looked decent for what it is. I wouldn't go to Big Bear, its just a ugly tourist trap. If you don't mind driving to the beach, San Clemente State Beach would be a super fun place to camp. Hope you find a good place.
