Where is there great camping near Houston/San Antonio?

  • I live in Houston and am trying to drag my boyfriend camping. I am willing to drive a good distance for a nice spot with a LAKE. His idea of camping is a Holiday Inn with no room ...show more

  • Answer:

2 of my favorite campgrounds are near you, Garner State Park and Pedernales Falls State Park, although neither is on a lake, both are on rivers. Just a little bit further north, I can highly recommend Inks Lake State Park, on Inks Lake and right next door to Lake Buchannon. Lake Fairfield State Park near Corsicana is great -- it's a TU electric power plant cooling lake, the water is consistently 85 to 95 degrees even in the winter. Found some 99º water there once in the summer right next to the discharge. Bass are active year-round and they have freshwater redfish. And tilapia. To your south you have Choke Canyon State Park on Choke Canyon Reservoir, which I've not visited, but I've been to lots of Texas state parks and they are pretty consistent. [edit -- yeah, I forgot about Colorado Bend state park on the colorado river about 12 miles downstream from Lake Buchannon you can make the trip by boat it's nice. It's a tough park to get to though, couple miles of the worst washboard road.]
