    Allegheny National Forest. I never met a bear that I did not like. The Allegheny National Forest (ANF), Pennsylvania’s only National Forest, is approximately 517,000 acres and includes land in Elk, Forest, McKean and Warren counties in the northwestern corner of the State. About 463,000 acres are forested, 42,000 acres are non-forest, and 11,000 acres are covered by water (primarily the Allegheny Reservoir). Trust me, you will not be "taking down" a bear like Rambo. At least not without the machine gun or exploding arrow tips. Anyplace you camp in the tri-state area will have bears. They are less of a problem in the southern NJ pinelands but they are still there. And this is the time of year when they are most agressive as they are trying to bulk-up for their winter hibernation. So bears that might not normally approach humans become more fearless and there's a higher likelihood of encounters. That said, as long as you keep a clean campground, keep coolers locked out-of-site in your vehicle, and other food, trash and scented items hung properly out of reach, bears will not generally be a problem. There are plenty of places you can go in NY and PA that are nice. Harriman/Bear Mountain and Adirondack Forest Preserve in NY are two of my favorites.
