Answer:
you pretty much can do anything you want. I am assuming you are tenting it, which is where I started and eventually moved to a motorhome with a range and what not. But anyways you can do hot dogs, hamburger, steaks, pork, ribs, beans, the choices are endless all you need is a cooler with ice to keep things that need to be temperature appropriate. Most campgrounds have the grates built in to fireplaces, or the grills you can use. It will be a little different not having the oven but in my opinion food tastes better cooked over the fire. Enjoy!

I find that what kind of food I want when camping depends on which type of camping trip it is: “accomodation” camping or “for its own sake” camping. Accomodation camping is where I just need a place to eat and sleep near a destination. “Deer camp” or any kind of hunting camp would fall in this category, as would camping near an amusement park or any other destination where the camping itself is not the entertainment. I would think this would also include camping for the purpose of visiting a beautiful area where you’d like to do some hiking and canoeing. When I’m doing accomodation camping, experience has shown me that I tend to resent time spent on camp chores, like chopping firewood, cooking, hauling water, and washing dishes. I want to spend my time doing what I came to do, not dealing with all the tasks involving food. This year for deer camp, I brought a couple of coolers and foods like premade peanut butter sandwiches, egg salad, and cold fried chicken. Side dishes were things like baby carrots with ranch dressing or shredded cabbage, again with salad dressing. Desserts were cookies and rice krispy treats prepared beforehand at home. Breakfast? Well, I brought cold cereal and milk. I also brought paper plates, bowls and cups which could be burned in my once-daily campfire. I also brought plastic silverware, which I bagged up to carry to the campground dumpster. The only hot meal was pre-cooked bratwurst browned over the fire on a marshmallow fork. I did bring marshmallows, hot cocoa mix and popcorn to make snacks at night. All cold meals get a little tedious, especially when you’ve been out in the field hunting all day in cool weather and you know you’ll have to sleep in subfreezing temperatures. “For its own sake” camping is different. Then, there’s really nothing to do except deal with your physical needs in lower tech ways than usual. If it’s time to build the fire to cook lunch by the time you’ve washed the breakfast dishes, well, that’s part of the adventure. In that case, I want to take the time to make really special meals. Bacon and eggs with fried potatoes for breakfast, cheeseburgers and grilled zucchini for lunch, a foil-wrapped hobo dinner in the evening with freshly chopped vegetables mixed with sausage. all made over an open fire. Did you know you can pan-fry yellow cake batter just like pancakes? Makes a great dessert, especially when you top it with apples or bananas cooked in foil with butter and cinnamon sugar. Which kind of camping are you doing?

I gotta add my two cents here. I have always been the camp cook. Imake a keyhole shaped hole and build a fire in the round end. After i get a good amount of coal I rake them into the slot end of the hole over the following: one bird stuffed with fruit like apples pears etc to keep it moist. all wrapped in doubled foil potatoes and celery and onions wrapped as well. the bird can be chicken or cornish hens or....get creative. bury them in coals and go play for a while.the coals usually disipate and dont burn things up while you gone away and there is no real open flames to burn down the camp site. I like to use the "complete" pancake mixes in the morning, you can get creative with them too. smoked sausages and frank keep easily. canned meats can work too. most of all have fun!

This depends on your cooking equipment. If I am using a small stove or gas burner I try to cook something quick and in one pan. The ingredients have to be easy to carry and not need refrigeration so if you are back packing go for light, foil packaged stuff or dried ready meals that just need boiling water to reconstitute. However, if you can carry a bag of quick cook pasta, a carton of tomato passata, tinned sweetcorn or other veg. You can cook the pasta in 6 mins or less if it is fresh, add the veg, strain and add the tomato. Grated cheese on top makes all the difference.

One of my favorite campfire recipes Is foil pockets. You cut up your favorite vegetables, Corn, squash, asparagus, Potatoes ect. Then put a ball of hamburger in it. Fold in foil and throw into coals not flames. Let cook for about 25 min. Also Kabobs are great or any meat with a lot of BBQ sauce. I like breakfast burritos (cooked in skillet over campfire Eggs, sausage, green Chile's, and salsa.) Its easy and you don't need to use plates or eating utensils. Oh ya with the foil pockets you want to make sure to put all vegetables in a bowl With a little bit of oil and along with spices if you wish, before you put into foil.
