Answer:
Jess more than covered it, but sounds to me like she is going to start a whole new city. Look through her list and delete what you don't think you need.

there is a lot of good answers from all of these people. but if you are only going a couple of days you could minimize what you are bringing. for a 2-3 day trip this is what i would pack. remember the less stuff you bring the lighter your pack will be. Clothing -3 pairs of socks -3 pairs of underwear -1 pair of pants or shorts that you will be wearing (pants that have the legs zip off very convenient) -1 tee shirt -1 longsleeve tee shirt -1 fleece jacket -1 windbreaker/rain jacket -hat or beanie -hiking boots with good ankle support ***when hiking in the spring weather may be cool at night. layering all of these clothes together should keep you warm. if not keep a bottle of SoCo with you. Food - trail mix - beef jerky - dehydrated packeted food - granola bars - (2) one-litre bottles of water *** If you are going fishing on your hiking trip you can substitute your food with fish. but if you don't catch fish you want to make sure you brought food. Misc. - MATCHES!!! or LIGHTER!!! (Unless you happen to have a 9 volt battery and steel wool or your Bear Grylls or Survivorman) - shovel - toilet paper (leaves and pine needles are not soft) - sleeping bag - tent - back pack (duh!) - single burner stove (i have one that runs on white gas or gasoline) - small container to carry white gas or gasoline.(for 2-3 days this may not be needed. just make sure your burner is full) - flashlight - small pot of metal cup/mug to boil water in - rope - water purifier (there are lots of different ways to get fresh water. i have a PUR brand hand pump purification system when getting water out of streams or lakes) ***you may bring soap and your toothbrush and tooth paste if you want. not brushing your teeth and washing up for a couple of days isn't going to kill you. a bottle of hand sanitizer will suffice. the rope is useful to hang your food from a tree banch away from your campsite to keep bears from coming into your tent. My best advice is to keep it light and simple.

I suggest that you check out this article. If you are planning on hiking in you will need figure out how to reduce the weight of what you are carrying. Many of the list that the other people have posted are good but if you try to carry everything that is listed your backpack will weigh 60 + pounds. My my backpack has everything I need for 5 day worth of backpacking and it weighs around 30 lbs. Keep in mind that if you are going to be camping in an area that has little to no water that you will have to carry it in. Water weighs 8.33lbs per gallon and most adults will consume 1 gal per day. Check out the article below. www.kuffelcreek.com/Lightweight Backpacking.pdf/LIGHTWEIGHT.pdf

There are some good lists on-lien that give you details about what to pack in. I'd say it depends on how far you're hiking in, if it's a few miles, you might be roughing it a bit more than if it's a half mile or so. For overnight hikes in the past, I've carried: Sleeping bag, Tent (or hammock, Henessy Hammocks rock), 3 pairs of socks, clothing layers to adjust to the overnight temperatures, flashlight (battery-less or bring extra batteries), first aid kit (must have), water purification system (either iodine tablets, or a water filter), hiking stove (MSR makes some nice ones, but make sure you know how it works and try it out before lighting the woods on fire), food (if it's a close hike, you can bring stuff back and forth from your car, otherwise, you can get some trail food (i.e. MountainHouse) that you just add hot water too and they end up pretty tasty. Toilet paper, camping shovel, a trash bag (pack out everything you bring in)... I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff, but that'll get you started.
