As with the hills there's no 'always favourite'. Loads of places have been very enjoyable whatever the weather. Take each place and day as it comes is my way of thinking, but Helvellyn keeps coming to me when I think about good views for breakfast, and the sweep of Studland Bay in Dorset with the hills behind it and walks though the paths of Purbeck after breakfast on the beach. On Helvellyn I've woken to some great sights in the mornings, sometimes with the cloud down over Patterdale and the eastern fells and the watery Sun rising through it, sometimes as clear as a bell and see for miles, even to the Isle of Man rising out of the sea in the west. The beach at Studland near Swanage has been a joy for camping and on the Purbeck Hills the views are superb though the hills don't reach the heights of Dartmoor or the Lakeland Fells. Norfolk is also great for beach camping, with huge spaces as the sea goes over a mile out around Hunstanton and the north Norfolk coast, like Red Rock and Hoylake on the Wirral south of Liverpool where the sunsets over the massive sands take the place of sunrises from the Norfolk coast. At Durness near Cape Wrath there is a great campsite on the grassy area above the cove and has paths down the low sandstone cliffs onto the sand and rocks where the campsite bar has had some good beach parties organised. The bar is the village pub for some, because the community centre bar is a long hard walk up the hill out of the village. It's not often I'm camping on a site but that one is worth the camping fee. On the way there are superb places to stop and camp all along the coast road from Thurness through Tongue, and on the cross country roads from Inverness. Either route, it's a joy to be there. Where I'm from we have the lovely Chiltern Hills and the beech forests of Ashridge with great views and beautiful countryside all around, with maybe the best view in southern England from the lookout on top of the monument there, or from the Boer War monument at Coombe hill a few miles away. In the south west there is the amazing Symons Yat and the Yat Rock....what a treasure, and great camping places all along the river. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-ashridge/ . . . .
