  you need a bike and gear. and you need experience. depends on the racing type. first if you dont already have a bike then get one. do not get a chinese brand bike. get a suzuki honda kawasaki or yamaha maybe even ktm. although ktm is used more for endouro type races not supercross or motocross. i would assume you mean you want to get into motocross racing. bike can get really expensive so look around. craigslist isnt the best place but its not the worst either. once you have your bike you need gear. starting with a helmet. a helmet is very important not a desion to be made on color. all helmets should be dot approved. make sure they are. make sure you measure your head correctly. measure the circumfreence of your head 1 in above your eyebrow. different brands have different sizing so check the size charts. helmets can range from about $100 to anywhere around $500. but it is probably the most important protection to wear. a peice of gear to accompany your helmet is goggles. there are two main types of goggles. tear off and regular. i would reccomend regular for a beginner. they are just normal goggles that strap around your helmet and provide eye protection. for a more experienced rider just wanteing to get into racing i would reccomend tear off goggles. they are the same thing however they have a lot clear plastic "stickers" on top of them with little tabs on the side. when you are following someone mud will get kicked up and just like normal goggles it will spalt right on to it. but when the goggles start to get enough mud to interfer with their vision they will tear off a layer and just drop it on the track. so then they have clean goggles. simple as that. next you will need boots. boots come in a varitey. there are many to choose from. i would sugggest going to a store and trying them one and comparing but if you cant get to a store online is fine just make sure you do some research. alpinestars are the number one boot company out there. all the pros whether its freestyle motocross or street most will be wearing alpinestars. however they are also probably the most expensive. so shop around til you find a boot you like in your price range. gloves are also something you need. they can be anywhere from about $5 to a lot for a pair of gloves. you will also need a jersey and pants. you can get them seperate or together. there is a huge price range. if you are in a hot area i would reccomend a lighter weight breathable suit. such as i beleive fox airline. a chest protector is also very helpful. you can get them from a huge price range. you can get just the basics (like helmet goggles gloves and boots) and ride in your yard and stay on a reletivly small budget or go all out and stay on a modorate budget or go all out on a spending spree and easily spend $1000 on just gear. you also need experience. i would reccomend getting a fell for the bike and how to ride in your yard or field. i would not reccomend going to the track for a little while. unless you are an intermedate to modorate rider just looking to race. then a website with a track finder is http://www.motocross.com/locations.html if you have never been to a track you have to be paying attention full time. make sure you dont do anything to big or difficult for you experience level because motocross is a dangerous sport. also beaware of the other riders. try to stay away from riders with less experience than you because they might interfer with your riding without knowing. and let the more experienced riders pass you. they know what they are doing. just find a good line and have fun. hope i helped.
