I've been wondering this myself as far as I know this is't possible at least not yet, and its been so long now that I'm begining to doubt if it will be introduced at all.

Nintendo announced on the 8th December 2006 that you will be able to do this. But you can't do this yet and the amount of stars it will cost is unknown. Hopefully they will say soon. I've got almost 3000 stars that i'm not doing anything with.
