How do I install Linux on PS3?

How do i install Linux on a PS3?

  • i'm looking to install a seperate operating system on my PS3 so i can use it more as a computer instead of buying a computer. If i installed linux could i use Microsoft Word?

  • Answer:

Download and burn an ISO (use Alex Feinman's ISO Burner plugin, or something like Nero. Make sure to burn an ISO cd, not a data cd) of a linux distro like Yellow Dog Linux or Ubuntu. Both of those support the PS3. On the XMB, there's an option for "install other OS." You can allot 10gb to the "Other OS." Simply put the disc in the system and it will install. Couple of things: 1) Make sure to backup your game saves first. The harddrive will be erased. 2) Have a USB keyboard, since you can't use bluetooth until after it installs. You can install the PS3 controller functions after you install PS3 Linux. If you need more help, on PS3forums.com there's a dedicated Linux subsection, with a Ask a Question thread, an FAQ, and a beginner's guide. It also has links to where to download linux http://ps3forums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=51 You can definitely use Open Office, which opens MS Word files, and can save them. This comes preinstalled with Linux. You could run Word through an application called Wine, but OO is probably the better choice.

Make sure you back up your data. okay first off to install linux you need their os called yellowdog. it cost $40, HOWEVER it is availible for download for free on the internet (legally). look here for a how to: http://ps3.qj.net/Yellow-Dog-Linux-free-version-officially-released-/pg/49/aid/77583 the site will tell you everything you need to know, make sure you have a usb mouse and keyboard. also go to system settings and allow 10 GB to other os. it makes room for your other os. but it formats the whole hard drive, if you ever want the data back for the ps3, you can choose: allow 10GB for ps3. once installed the other os will automatically start, so if you want to go back to the ps3 xmb when powering on, hold down the powerbutton and wait for 2 beeps and let go: ta-da! back to ps3, you can switch by changing ps3 to other os in the settings. good luck.

you would not be able to use word but you would be able to dowbload and install open office. it is free and in my opinion is better than office, not only that but yo can save your files as office documents! So if you write a paper in write (open office version of word) you could save it either as a open office doucment or microsoft word document, same goes for all the other applications as well such as excel etc. to install linux all you need to do is get the linux boot cd. you can either download it for free from their website and make a boot cd using nero or isomaker or you can have some copies sent to your house again for free. once you have the cd put it in the ps3 and it will boot fromt he cd just like comp would. follow the install instructions and there you will have linux on your ps3! hope this helps!

I don't think you can. You should check what programs are compatible with Linux. I know iTunes is not. If Word is not compatible you should be able to use a compatible open source application that is similar to Word.
