    well, the PS1, PS2, and PS3 all use different processors, however, I believe that the PS3's processor was programmed to also use the same 'operating system' as the PS1, because it is very simple by today's standards, and takes almost no money to do, however, I'm assuming that to play ps2 games, they would have to include another processor designed specifically for the PS2, because the processor's capabilities are either difficult or expensive to render on the Playstation 3's processors. Hey, I could be completely wrong, but from what I understand, that's why.

If you remember correctly the old ps3 80GB cost 700 dollars. Why? Because of blu-ray and being able to play every single ps2/ps1 game. Plus of the internet and all that. It costs us as the buyers more if they add ps2 bc because alot of people still play ps2 but how many people still play ps1? Not many thats why cause if they add ps1 bc not many people play it because barely any people still play ps1 games. But many people play ps2 games. So like the guy above me said its simple buisness

The newer 80GB do not play PS2 games to cut down prices. Certain PS3 models have PS2 BC but they've all been discontinued.

i was asking the same question myself! I heard that they took Emotine Engine and all the guts of a ps2 out of the ps3. But it can still play Ps1 games?
