What kind of jobs can someone with a Master's Degree in Biology get?
-
I am curious as to what types of jobs may be open to a person with a Master's Degree in Biology. What can one do without a PhD in Biology? Are there "career" type positions that one can get with the potential to advance, move up, and so forth...rather than just tech-like positions? Also, the focus of the master's research being genetics/molecular bio.

Answer:
In terms of academic (faculty) jobs, you are essentially limited to teaching positions at community colleges and small universities or high schools. There are too many bio PhDs being produced as it is, so people with Masters degrees are pushed out. In terms of research, most industry scientist positions look for PhDs (since there is a lot of them) as well, so I don't know if there are openings for non-tech positions for master's students. If you are willing to get into administration and management type positions, there are career options there at biotech companies, as people who can both speak science and deal with marketing and execs are probably highly valued. In terms of pure research based positions, though you really need a PhD to get anywhere. A lot of biology programs (like the one I am in) don't even offer a masters degree except for undergraduates who decide to do a 5th year masters and PhD students who drop out early. Note: I am a grad student who has never worked in the real world.

My opinion only, but with much observation around me over the years. Those that get a Masters in a Science then: Continue for a PhD and into long term research: college, laboratory, industry High school teacher MBA Law Degree Medical degree (doctor, dentist, nurse) Science technician in a large laboratory setting Switch to some related engineering and get a masters in engineering and then enter industry or work and get a masters in engineering while working Enlist in the military and become an officer and work in military labs I hope that helps.
