Good nesting material for pregnant rats?

What is a good material for nesting boxes for rats?

  • I mean the actual nesting box, NOT the bedding inside it. I've done some research but there's not a lot of information. Aparently wood smells after a while and plastic is ...show more

  • Answer:

Nesting box as in you'll breed them? Or as in.. A house for them to sleep in? If it's for breeding.. Don't do it. Assuming you're buying from a pet store you have no idea what their lines carry and it's stupid to breed when that's the case. And good breeder or rescue groups make you sign a no-breeding contract. If it's just a house for them to sleep in, cardboard box. Give them paper towel strips and they'll pull them all in. That is unless you end up with rats that sleep in weird spots(wheel, litter box, etc) rats also LOVE hammocks. You can sew some or have someone do it for you or even just hang an old shirt in their cage. I use safety pins to hang my hammocks. Goodluck. my rats have plastic ones which have been slightly chewed around the edges but the rats are fine, and anyway ANYTHING can be chewed unless you give them metal boxes or something lol. i sometimes also give my rats little cardboard boxes and just throw them out when i clean the cage but sometimes they soak the cardboard in pee and it makes a big mess.

i use a card bored box. i cut a little window, and a door, then put some paper towels, tissues, napkins and toilet paper outside the box, so my rat can chose what to put in the box. you could also sew some material where the hole for the door is, so it can be kinda like going into a tent. but i wouldn't recommend it, the rat will chew the thread and it will get loose and can wrap around the babies, and the material that hangs will make it so if a baby somehow (and s/he WILL) get out of the nest, she wont see him. (someone suggested a hammoc. if you can get one big enough for a rat and babies, dont hang it because they can fall out without the mom even noticing)

We use boxes. Half a soda box. Tissue box. We also have a ferret bed. Little love seat looking thing. All three my girls curl up and snuggle together in that and while they have chewed the white fluffy lining off, they haven't cut into the real lining.

You can buy a hammock. They come in different shapes and sizes.

i have ferrets and they are related to rats and my ferrets have a wooden nesting box in the shed outside where they live, they play with balls, plant pots, tubes and lots of other things, good luck

Rats like soft things. If you have old t-shirts, cut them up in pieces manageable enough for mama rat to move them around her cage to determine where she wants them. I think that's the easiest way to create good nesting material for her. Fleece works REALLY well, as well.

We often use cardboard boxes for our rats. When they get soiled or too chewed up, we toss 'em & give the little guys fresh boxes. Depending on the rats, a box will last from a few days to about a week (our girls chew them up quickly but the boys usually don't). Sturdy boxes, like the kind juice boxes come in, can be suspended from the top or side of the cage, while tissue boxes can be placed on the cage bottom. Of course, every cage has @ least 1 hammock too.

Wood can be harmful to rats too. Just thougth I'd say that. I do recommend hammocks and pouches for them to cuddle up in. I actually make hammocks, I have premades and I will make custom ones too. I also recommend having more than one hammock in the cage. I use fleece and flannel, my rats LOOOVE it! If you'd like to see the stuff I make, my website is animalhammies.webs.com. You get 2 free chewy toys with each order.
