How often should guinea pigs eat fresh fruits and vegetables?
-
I just bought a guinea pig yesterday, and this is my first time having one, so I was wondering how often should they eat fresh fruits and vegies with vitamin C in it?
-
Answer:
Guinea pigs should have fresh vegetables every day, and fresh fruit a few times a week. Too much of anything can give them diarrhea, though, so be careful. Good luck!

They should eat about a cup of fresh veg everyday, and fruit 2-3 times a week as it has too much sugar in. Fruit and veg is not a treat it is essential to their health. They need around 2 cups of fruits and veggies per day. Look at the link, it's a life saver when it comes to veggies, etc., http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/diet-nutrition/22156-everything-you-need-know-about-cavys-diet-read-me-nutrition-charts-info.html

I give my guinea pigs some fresh kale, greens or carrots every day - I think its fine as long as you don't feed them too much. Also i know you're not meant to give them spinach for some reason. :)

It's different for different foods. http://www.guineapigcages.com/food/Veggie-and-Fruit-Charts.pdf There's a chart with how often you can feed things to your guinea pigs. I try to feed them different things every day but sometimes I can't.. So yeah. Just make sure they have pellets and hay all the time. :]

Every day! This is the real answer- if they don't get vegetables every day, they will get very thin. Guinea pigs need to be very big. I do not mean fat, just big like they are supposed to be. Here's a tip- take a paper plate, put some greens on it like lettuce, kale, or parsley, and carrots, maybe green beans, and of course red pepper. They sometimes love corn... but some guinea pigs are picky about corn. This will lead to a happy guinea pig-because he is well fed and has a hopefully greatful and listening to this note owner.

A really good, cheap (if you have a yard) source of vitamin C is in dandelion leaves; it has far more than oranges and many others you might normally think are high in C. I give my guinea pig a big handful of grass with some dandelion leaves almost every day, and veggies/fruit several times a week. I have to think that is more natural for their gut than pellets all the time. Just don't let them get fat, they get lazy and that's not good for them. There's a really good book on guinea pigs out there, can't remember the name, but it is in a series that covers all small animals and you can usually find them in pet stores. After 16 yrs with guinea pigs, I still refer to my book!
