How to tell if a female chinchilla is pregnant?

  • Answer:

Chin Chin Lady pretty much summed it up for you. 8 months is too young for a chin to breed, so if you have her in with a male, I'd separate them. Pregnancy in young chins can kill them, if they make it through, then in most cases the kits don't. A chinchillas gestation is 111 days, so count from the day you put them together. Keep a close eye on her for complications, in case she is pregnant. To be on the safe side, you can take her to the vet for an ultrasound. You can also look through the bedding to see if you can find a plug (I have a picture of one on my site), but you won't always find one because they sometimes get eaten.

a swollen belly is usually a good indicator of pregnancy in small animals. You can try feeling her stomach because you can usually feel the babies inside of her. Also check for her hoarding bedding or other loose materials (nesting) and check for a discharge coming from her genitals, thats a sign shes going into labor.
