What is difference between Accidental Damage Protection Warranty and Onsite Warranty?
-
I am buying a laptop online and comparing two similar products. One has Accidental Damage Protection Warranty while another one has Onsite warrant (Parts and Labour Covered). Both are for 1 year. Can anybody provide some good insight on this? P.S. I am buying it in India from Flipkart.

Answer:
1. Accidental Damage Protection - Will cover replacement of parts in cases where say you drop the laptop by mistake, or a tea cup falls on it etc. Basically any 'accidental' damage to it; though the company will try hard to avoid it. It will not cover wear and tear damage, scratches etc. 2. Onsite - The service guy will come to your place, to replace parts. But this will cover only the issues like say your display isn't working due to a manufacturing defect or say you have heating issues and your heat sink isn't working. Which is better? Accidental protection is of course better, as it decreases the chances of the manufacturer NOT repairing your laptop. <I assume this is Dell you are talking about?>

The answer lacks sufficient detail to be sure, but the above appear to be two very different products. You need to check the exact policy language.âAccidental damageâ in the US is a kind of insurance, not a warranty. There is no promise the product has no defects (which is what a warranty contains). There is a promise to pay for repairs if the product is damaged in an accident (aka, a âcasualtyâ). This would likely not provide for repairs if the product had a defect. You usually need to allege a traumatic event followed by failure to claim accidental damage coverage. On the other hand, a warranty is a promise the product has no defects. If a defect arises they will provide for repair. If the product just stop working, this has you covered. But it will likely not apply if there is an accident. Unless it is the sort of accident that the product should have survived, thereby indicating a defect. An onsite warranty is a regular warranty with the added benefit of the repairman meeting you at your home or place of business. This usually results in quicker repair and is very convenient when the object would be difficult to pack and ship to a repair depo.Another option is an extended warranty. These are usually sold by someone other than the manufacturer and cover the same things as a regular warranty, but for a longer term. It is not a true warranty. It is actually insurance against a defect, as opposed to insurance from a casualty. These features can always be combined in different ways. Sometime premium credit cards offer a hybrid extended warranty and accidental damage coverage to items purchased with the credit card.A few things to remember. In most English speaking countries, the store that sold the goods has to honor the manufacturers warranty, though the odds of meeting a customer service person who understands this is nearly zero. There is widespread debate about whether you need to file a warranty claim before the warranty expires, when the breakage happened before the warranty expires. As an attorney, I believe the clear answer is it does not matter when you make your claim, so long as the defect or damage covered happened before the expiration. It could take a small claims suit to win in such a case however. If something you own is stolen from an automobile, and was not an automotive accessory, you may be covered by your home owners insurance (or renterâs insurance). If you ask for advice picking a product, you may benefit from an implied warranty of fitness for a particular purpose. For example, if you explain you have trouble getting phone reception from you mobile inside your apartment and the salesman then says âthis phone is great with difficult areas, you will have no problem with it,â then you are now warranted for reception inside your apartment. You might demand a refund if you then experience reception issues in your apartment. In many jurisdictions, you may claim an implied warranty in other circumstances. Say you bought a phone that was reconditioned and thus had only a 90-day warranty. And on day 100 the battery forcibly explodes damaging your ear. You may be entitled to claim a breach of the implied warranty. Such an egregious failure may be deemed a violation of the general implied warranty of fitness for use as a phone. Both warranties and insurance generally do not cover ordinary wear and tear. But some products have special rules because the manufacturer has found enhanced coverage gives him a marketing advantage. Thus many car tires are warranted to wear at a certain rate and not faster. And many car tires are even âwarrantedâ against accidents, like nails in the roadway (technically this is insurance). These special provisions only arise when specifically mentioned however.
