  For food crops: The crop yield in the United States is currently high, so only small to modest improvement can occur. The most significant market for methods to improve crop yield are in developing countries. The primary method used to increase crop yield deals with reducing crop loss from insects and weeds. Secondly, fertilizers are used to increase the nutrient profile of nutrient-poor soils. Thirdly, crop rotation is used to reduce the effects of planting the same crop on the same plot of land year in and year out. Next, improved irrigation for areas in which rainfall, water supply or drainage is poor can prevent crop loss. Lastly, genetically modified crops have been generated to address crop loss due to insects and weeds. In poor countries, planting the genetically modified plants is sometimes cheaper than having to apply pesticides, and has a less immediate impact on the environment (nonspecific toxicity to other organism). Genetically modified crops that are herbicide resistant allow farmers to apply sufficient herbicide to kill weeds without damaging their crop.
