What are the advantages of Mass prouduction farming?

  • Are there any advantages of factory farming pigs and chickens?

  • Answer:

there are no advantages, only to the owners and a few well payed off politicians. as for the meat, it was far better when real farmers all had a few that were looked after without drugs, and out in the fresh air. no one benefits by putting animals in hell like that. it is the same for chickens.totally inhumane

The main answer is to reduce costs. Supermarkets demand cheap food to help them win business from their customers, so they buy on a commodity basis, that is in huge volumes. Prices that farmers receive for most agricultural commodities have not increased for 15 to 20 years, yet the supermarkets make higher profits every year. The only way for farmers to stay in business and supply the market with the food it says it needs at the price it is prepared to pay is to specialise and carry out farming on a big scale. If you don't like the system, buy from farmers markets and farm shops.

The advantage of mass production is to capture economies of scale, which means lower input cost. The same theory applies to almost everything we consume. Thats why they don't make cars in small shops scattered all over the country, it just isn't very efficient.

The advantage of mass production farming is cost control of production. Frees answer is interesting. It is truly amazing what people will condemn to avoid getting their own hands dirty. Yes, it would be much better if we had more "real" farmers who did not use excess drugs and production methods. But we don't. Farmers make up less than 2% or our population and that population is getting older. The average age of a farmer in America is 56 years old. Compare that to the average age of Americans being 35. That is an entire generation missing. Where in the hell is the next generation going to come from when all we hear is that everything the farmer does is bad?

There's a lot of profit in it for the big growers. I don't think the animals and the independent farmers think much of it though...it kind of ruins their lives.
