  • why is rotating crops which is changing the types of crops grown in a field a wise practice for most farming?

    it's wise because one crop uses certain nutrients that another crop will put back in here's an example: cotton uses certain nutrients found in the soil and if its grown year after year after year after year, then the soil will be depleted of those nutrients that are essential for the cotton to grow and produce properly- which means more chemical (fertilizer, etc..) will have to be applied to keep the cotton healthy but, if it's rotated with another crop like soybeans or peanuts, they'll (the soybean or peanut crop) will use what the cotton put in the soil and they'll put what the cotton needs in the soil. if one crop is grown back to back, soil diseases/pests like nematodes will be more common and it will be harder for the crop to grow and produce properly, thus that means less of a profit. simple terms- while one crop needs one or more essential nutrients, the other crop planted the next year will put what the other crop needs and will use what the other crop put in the soil

I am a produce broker in southern N . J . Farming is a 50 million $$ biz. Rotation of crops , is a no brainier . TOO much depletion of nutrients in soil will cause disease and poor crop production . Resting the land with a cover crop , is a widely practiced method in our town.

Each plant - during its growth secretes specific biochemicals from the roots. These are specific to stage of the crop. These biochemicals can be anti-nutritional, antagonists, or beneficial to various crops. Also, these biochemicals selectively attract and amplify unique set of microbes from the soil. These microbes are in turn useful/ harmful for specific crops. Therefore considering all such combinations of interactions - besides nutrient and disease suppression benefits - crop rotation is carried out. Better though, a mixed crop should be grown.
