What do you think of "who killed the electric car" and it's many points it makes in favor of electric cars?

Plus with gas price as high as they are, do you think electric cars are the future

Answer:
Bogus propaganda. The electric car has been around since the 1830's http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/223/electric-car-timeline.html If it was a good idea it would have caught on. The same problem that plagued the electric car 180 years ago still exist. Limited range on a charge and a long recharge time. Lack of interest keeps killing the electric car. GM had thousand of people "interested" in buying the EV-1 but when the interested people were told what it would actually cost the interest evaporated. That isn't mentioned in the propaganda movie. Even if you could magically make electric cars practical we would still have a problem because the electric grid is running close to 100% capacity and environmentalist oppose any practical solutions to improving it. So you wont be able to plug your car in without causing blackouts.

I may have over looked it but I don't recall them saying what the cost of the EV-1 was? They said what the lease cost was but not what it cost for GM to build the car? Did GM lose money on the deal? I wonder how much it would cost to set up just one mile of roadway with an inductive charging system? What would be the affect on the system as the road develops pot holes? Could it sever the cables in the system shorting it out?

Originally the movie seemed to be somewhat indecisive. I thought that they could have done more with the evidence that they had. As time goes on I have come to see that the movie asks us to consider the nature of events and their implications for the future of the electric vehicle and our society in general. It does not give answers as much as it encourages us to find them. We have been electrifying the IC engine since the addition of the electric motor to start the vehicle and this "hybrid" pushed "pure" battery electric vehicles out of the market place around 1906. Computers on vehicles have more recently continued the trend. The hybrid drive system is a popular combination and a further electrification of the IC engine. Other electric adaptations include electric valves, electric turbochargers, electric emission sensors and controls, electronically controlled fuel injection and in some places the series hybrid is even called an electric transmission. Increased electrification of our transportation is clearly a trend. The electric motor is a highly efficient rotary engine in addition to its other attributes.1 As a better way to convert energy to rotary motion than the flawed and inefficient IC engine it is only a matter of time before it is fully adopted. But we haven't yet decided upon the best way to provide electric power to the electric motor. Presently we are pursuing battery electric vehicles as if the infrastructure should be similar to IC vehicles . We are not yet really thinking "outside of the box." An alternative that makes some economic sense is to electrify our roadways (2) and transmit power to electric vehicles: http://www.greencarcongress.com/2010/02/nrel-study-finds-that-a-dynamic-plugin-vehicle-could-be-a-promising-technology-pathway-for-costeffec.html Electric cars are the future but not if we sit on our hands or throw up our hands and say electric cars will never work. We could allow a wider perspective in our solutions and find that the answer is right in front of us.

A very one sided movie that got it wrong. The consumer killed the electric car, sorry it's that simple. The EV1 cost more than a Cadillac, it only seated 2, it had limit range, it was starting to have safety issues, and GM was looking at supplying parts for the next 20 years for a very limited run car. You'll also notice that the movie never said ONE word about the Ford, PU Chevy PU, Chrysler, Van Toyota, etc electric cars and trucks, strange big out made GM crush all the EV1's but didn't make Ford or anyone else do the same. You could buy you Ford electric PU, but since it was basically a Ford Ranger, Ford really didn't have to worry about supplying parts to it, since it took many of the same parts. As for the future, until the range is way up, or charging time is way down, electric car will be a very small market. EDIT Here's a list of the EV that they didn't talk about in the movie Chevrolet S10_EV Chrysler TEVan Ford Ranger_EV Honda EV_Plus Toyota RAV4_EV Solectria Force Nissan Altra Nissan Hypermini

Give a look to these two links: http://www.smartgridelectronics.com/2010/09/solar-cars.html http://www.smartgridelectronics.com/2010/01/how-much-is-to-charge-electric-car.html They will provide you a fair comparison between fossil fuel and electrical energy for car transportation. There is nothing inherently GREEN in electric cars, unless you specify where the electricity comes from.

obviously renewable sources will be our future...one or the other day v l see people using electric vehicle ...

I think it is pretty interesting and it doesn't surprise me that a lot of companies, especially oil companies, are against electric cars because it would affect their profit. But one day we're going to run out of oil so electric cars are really the only alternative at this point in time. We could have had a lot more on the market now but there's been a lot of backlash against it by special interest groups.
