What is a good adwords conversion rate?

Google AdWords: What would be a typical ad conversion rate for free software?

  • I know it sounds suspicious but we're a non-profit giving away self-help software. I am wondering what we could expect for a advertising conversion rate when we're giving something away completely free (no adware, malware, etc)...just free, good software.

  • Answer:

Anything above 10% is good in my experience.

Once I did a similar campaign and received double digit conversion rates, 20% to 40% but few of them repeat or upgraded or left any useful feedback most of them were just curious about the product and left the next day. Then I made the same campaign but this time I requested credit card numbers and my conversion rate went down to 3% but the quality of the users was higher. If the software is free then try to ask as much as possible in the sign up process to get any valuable insight from this campaign and since you are a non-profit to lower you ad costs I would recommend you to make your customers share the software with people they know. Could be with pay with a Facebook share or pay with a Tweet.
