What were each of the continents named after?

How were all the continents named? Why Asia and Africa, and not any other names?

  • Answer:

They're all Latin-based or Greek North and South America are the easiest (and yes, they are two separate continents: they're each larger than Europe and they're connected by an isthmus narrower than Turkey, Suez, or the Urals; get over it): they're named after Amerigo Vespucci, who figured out they were not Asia. Asia is basically what you get when you take Western Turkey (the original Asia), and keep going on forever. Africa is named for the region of Tunisia which was the closest point from Italy: again, just take that point and keep going forever. Europe is named after the woman in Greek mythology who was one of Zeus' many lovers, whom he turned into a bull to hide from his super-jealous wife. Australia - Pretty much just Latin for "Southern Land." Antarctica - Pretty much just Greek for "The Opposite of the Arctic."  Sure, there's a deeper etymology.
