What are some good vocal VSTs?

What are the best free VSTs for music production? How about VSTs under $30?

  • Orchestral/Electronic/Effects... you name it.

  • Answer:

I'm going to go with synth, FX and mixing stuff since that's my focus and I'm Mac based so missing out on a HEAPS of free stuff. TAL stuff is always worth a look and you'll see it being used by commercial artists who have more than enough money to pay for products. A few great synths, 2 good delays and a very nice algorithmic reverb plus more. Patrick also has 2 commercial products - a Juno emulation and an SH101 emulation. Both excellent and so cheap they might as well be free: http://kunz.corrupt.ch/Products For useful mixing tools I've recently started exploring the Melda Productions free suite which has pretty much everything you'll need for mixing/mastering purposes with some very clever ideas and touches: http://www.meldaproduction.com/plugins/product.php?id=MFreeEffectsBundle Synth-wise U-He who make the stunning Diva soft-synth released a couple of excellent freebies which are a nice way to get the U-He sound without spending a cent/penny/Flainian Pobble Bead. http://www.u-he.com/cms/zebralette - a single oscillator cut down version of Zebra, cut-down but still immensely powerful. http://www.u-he.com/cms/tyrelln6 - a simple but great sounding VA For experimental stuff have a play with the monophonic version of Madrona Labs' Aalto which is based on the design and thinking behind the Buchla modular synths. Free but you have to register with Beat magazine to get the copy, not a biggie and well worth it. http://www.beatdrive.de/?t=plugins&id=4 For transparent top quality compression for no money, I've been using this heaps lately and very impressed with it: http://www.tokyodawn.net/tdr-feedback-compressor-2/ If you are needing a DAW(sequencer) make sure to try out Reaper, it's not free but you can download it free and use it for an unlimited amount of time (strictly you are meant to do this within a month I think). Register when you are happy with it, which I have. It stands with the big names in my opinion with the only possible drawback being it doesn't come bundled with heaps of shiny plugins. It is cheap though and you're not paying for heaps of stuff you  may not need/use. http://www.reaper.fm/ There are so many more but I prefer to mention ones that I use often and find useful. I found out about some of these from an excellent 3 part series on Ilpo's blog here: http://www.resoundsound.com/25-best-free-vst-au-plugins-pc-mac-2013-part-1/ (link to following part is at the bottom). Ilpo has taken the time to recommend plugins he has made extensive use of rather than just your normal thrown together list. Best of luck and have fun making your music!

Some solid effects VSTs I know out there: The d-blue plugins: glitch, tape stop, crusher. Free, low foot print, awesome. There's a great reverb called Ambience, also free. Synths? I'm a big fan of noisemaker and monomate. Bread and butter stuff man.
