What is job offer protocol?

What is the protocol for getting an engineering job offer?

  • A software engineering recruiter says that I've received positive feedback after my technical interviews.  He wants to discuss a potential offer, before actually making the offer itself.  Is this pre-offer discussion normal, or should the company just make an offer outright?

  • Answer:

This is fairly SOP. Most Silicon Valley companies will run an offer by you verbally to gauge your interest. They have probably already asked you for your expectations re. salary ? This typically is where you may want to negotiate a salary, sign on bonus and or RSU's / options. This way, they can figure out how serious you are before going through further steps of background checks etc. which cost more money. Once they make an offer, it becomes quasi binding and it's harder for them to get out without compensating the candidate. Good Luck.

Asked like a true engineer. The answer is: it depends on the organization, the department within the organization, and the people within the department within the organization.Your knowledge aside, the people that hire you are humans, with all their preferences and idiosyncrasies. There is no single answer to your main question as asked, and the secondary question can only be answered as "It depends. Maybe, maybe not."
