  Most babies adopted from China are not orphans. They are girls abandoned by their parents who wanted their one-and-only child to be a boy. (China's one-child policy meant that in most circumstances families could have only a single child.) IIRC, the 'demand' for these girls from western couples wanting to adopt is now outstripping 'supply', and China is making it more difficult for foreigners to adopt. But ... as is true in any country that still has orphanages ... if the children aren't adopted, they grow up in the orphanage and then go out into the world when they are of age.
