Private adoption vs. agency adoption?

I just found out that private adoption exists (I always thought adoption had to be done through an agency). What's the benefit of choosing private adoption over using an agency ...show more

Answer:
Really there isn't really a big difference. No matter which way you choose to adopt you have to do all the same things to qualify. I prefer private because, it is a lot more personal. The first mom and the adoptive parents get to set all the rules. For instance how close they are and all. Like the two of you get to decide if the the AP go to doctors visit and all. Also after it is over letters go directly between the AP and the FP. I have heard that going with agencies that they sometimes try to push girls into it. Also I have heard that sometimes the phone calls are made with someone from the agency on the line too. That way you can't give to much information. I have also heard of a situation where the letters had to be sent through the agency but, the agency wasn't getting the letters to the first mom. Dianna

a private adoption is when you and the bio mom find each other on your own. You still need an agency of some kind to do the adoption home study and all states require home studies. Its lots of paper work, interviews, background checks, sometimes classes. and a few court appearances once you are state approved to adopt to terminate the mom and the dad;s parental rights and for the adoption hearing.

I think the #1 benefit of private adoption over agency adoption, is that you relinquish the baby/child straight to the people you wish to adopt them. This is usually 6 months to a year after the child is in the home With an agency placement, the baby/child is usually relinquished to THEM and then the agency places them with a couple or individual. Relinquishment is usually done as early as 72 hours after birth. For us private adoption was best. WE (all parents) are open to what we want and have no one trying to facilitate whats appropriate. We know where each other lives, our names and we see each other whenever it works out. Also we ALL got a copy of the adoption decree, no secrets. What's scary to me is that an agency has many resources to fight against a mother who wished to have her baby back. Even if the PAPs are willing to return the child, they can just place them with another couple. If someone is going to place privately, I would recommend getting all of their info and doing your own background checks Look up their myspace, facebook and criminal history. You can tell a lot by people by just doing these few things.
