What are the educational requirements to become a social worker in an adoption agency?

First moms - how do you rate your social worker/adoption agency?

  • On a scale of 1 to 10: 1 = extremely poor / useless 10 = OMG, love my agency, love being a b-mom! Who did the agency serve - you or the PAPs? What kinds of services did you ...show more

  • Answer:

Geeze, this is tough to answer. At the time I thought that the lawyer was a 10. She seemed on the top of knowledge of how adoption should be with regards to openness, counseling, etc... but it turns out that the procedures she used weren't very ethical or moral with regards to what I went through. I can't honestly rate her because while parts of her business were top notch other parts are inexcusable. She spoke a great deal about proper counseling for birthparents both before hand and after. But because I was so firm with relinquishing, I only had that 30 minute counseling session prior to matching with the one prospective adoptive couple I met. She was absolutely firm about how the hospital experience would be a positive with me calling the shots, and then I only ended up getting to see my son for 45 seconds on my belly despite begging to see him again. The next morning they released me early from the hospital so that I could legally sign the relinquishment papers. Signed based on 45 seconds of seeing my son. How is that okay? How could they think not to ask? Postpartum counseling was one session and also a joke.

-10000.. or less than useless.. Seymour Kurtz and Easter House are a stain on Illinois. Baby Broker Extraordinaire, is how I would categorize them. I got nothing before or after, except a lot of grief, pain and loss. ETA: Oh my, thumbs down for a personal experience! How deliciously funny! Seymour Kurtz and his agencies are nothing but baby brokers, who use the most coercive tactics you can imagine. Proven fact.. see babybrokers.com

"how do you rate your social worker/adoption agency?" How low can it go? Negative a billion? This is like asking "How did you rate your rapist/abuser/kidnapper or fill-in-the-blank regarding any violent crime against a helpless individual who had no chance of fighting back. "Who did the agency serve - you or the PAPs?" The paying customer of course. That's what it's all about: the money. If you can sucker or force some vulnerable mother to give up her baby you can make money hand over fist. A few hundred dollars in office expenses for a minimal amount of counseling -- however much it takes to convince her -- and you stand to make $20,000 and upwards if her infant is healthy and white. "What kinds of services did you receive?" Service? How about being driven there by the "housemother" of the wage home I was in, for about 2 hours of counseling during my pregnancy, in order to ensure that I was brainwashed into thinking that adoption was the ONLY option. Then after the birth, corralled in the social worker's office, emotionally abused until I was a wreck, and then threatened that unless i signed the papers my son would be languish in foster care indefinitely. No witnesses, no way to escape (I was 17 and my parents ensured that I had no choice), and no "service" other than raping me of my baby. "Do you receive any on-going support services from the agency?" The last I ever heard from them was when the worker called me to gloatingly inform me that the adopters had picked my son up from the hospital. That was the day my world ended. The only thing they gave to me was severe PTSD.

I did not deal with an agency, adoptions are controlled by the government here. I dealt with the hospital social worker who was neutral. She was nice, I'll give her a 7.
