When will there ever be a top level racing driver, like F1, IRL, or NASCAR, who will admit he//she is gay?

There was a guy who got into the Winston Cup level who was not only gay, but had a sex change later in life. JT Hayes, who is now known as Terri O'Connell ran one race in 1991.

There are still some who wonder about Geoff/Geoffrey Bodine.... and a few folks have some theories about Tim Richmond swinging both ways. Why should it matter anyways? Perhaps the vast majority of people don't really care or want to know.

there is at least one gay driver maybe more...you can bet on it. first of all to equate black and gay is not quite right. You can't help being black, but you can being gay. You can't hide being black, but you can being gay. We're not going to get into the debate of being born that way and blah blah blah. That's not the issue. Honestly, it's a fear issue. You will NEVER, or maybe not in this lifetime, see a gay man come out in NASCAR as stated before, it is too testosterone driven. There have been some "gay-centered" product endorsements (i.e. Garnier). Every gay guy I knew was cheering for Vickers at that point. But a lot of gay people won't come into the sport because, let's be for real-there are a lot of good ole boy, bible-thumping, southerners who fly the confederate flag for whatever reason it is (not always race) that turns minorities off and gays off. I say the sport has come a long way. But NASCAR will and does accept black readily because they know what they're getting. They're getting a black guy/girl--black doesn't "rub" off. The homosexual contagion is another fear. And no one wants to be "outed" as the first. Drivers are also sex symbols, so that would kill off half maybe even all of their fan base if a driver was to out himself. Men like men who are men and women like the same. There is already a homoerotic feel to the racing comrarderie as it is, so I think a gay man in the sport would just take it over the edge and freak a lot of traditional people out. Look at how badly some of them took the COT!!! (Sorry to ramble)

Im sure there are also. It will however be some time before anybody comes out. I dont see any gays comming out until there are black drivers prevelent in the racing world. There are a few black drivers, but very few.Once that is accepted, then you will see some gays come out. Its sad but true...
