The kers system............?

  • Answer:

KERS is a start at bringing F1 into the 21st century. One of the purposes of F1 is to develop and test new ideas for normal road cars. The sequential gearbox was written off at first but they persevered and it is now used by all teams and beginning to find it's way into production cars. The current spec KERS doesn't go far enough. Toyota are already using a more advanced system in their Prius hybrid. However the teams can only handle so much change at one time or F1 races will only have 5 cars finishing. A hydraulic system was proposed by Mercedes 10 years ago but was banned by the FIA. That is when KERS should have started in F1. The FIA badly needs someone with some foresight to move the sport foreward. Not bog it down in rules, regulations and enquiries.

I'm not sure if it is good. One of the great things about F1 is that overtaking is generally quite difficult, so you have to either pull of a great move of out think your opponent in the long term. At the moment KERS does not seem to have a significant (if any) advantage. Although it does seem to help slightly with overtaking, none of the KERS cars are at the front end of the grid.

I think it should only be allowed to be activated once every three laps.

If all the teams use KERS it may make the races more exciting, but KERS has its advantages as well as disadvantages.

It is a step towards more efficient motoring. As of now hauling it over 90% of the distance without extracting power from it is the meaningless part. I'd agree with TheRadiHam's suggestion, use it as much as you want. It should not be seen in the same light as NOX, this is a way to get more power while burning the same amount of fuel. Any other method burns more fuel or additives to gain extra power.

If it was just a push to pass system they require they could do it so much easier with fuel mapping software like the Indy cars did. I can't see carrying all that extra weight for a shot of power every now and then.

A good example is the battle between Webber and Hamilton in the Malaysian GP. Webber will overtake Hamilton in the corners and Hamilton overtakes Webber in the straights. I don't know about you but this is exciting wheel to wheel overtaking stuff that I wanted to see in Formula 1.

The complexity and awkward weight distribution is a high price to pay for a few seconds of power boost per lap. It would be better if the maximum storage capacity was limited, but usable whenever it had charge, rather than a set amount per lap. The whole reason for the system seems to be flawed though, a tiny bit of "recovered energy" from a system which probably costs many times more in resources and energy than the amount of energy it recovers over its entire lifetime.

I saw Alonso use it to stay ahead of someone, and it worked, but to be honest, it just seems like a waste of time - Brawn don't have it, and Kimi's failed.

A very antiquated technology - My watch has been running on the same principle for the last 10 years! But a formula one car? Dumb.
