  If you're good, you can make a living driving even if you're starting now. You will have to prove yourself to others that you are good and work your way up the ladder which could take years. There are several drivers who will never make it to formula 1 but are making a living (though probably not getting rich) driving. In ALMS or Grand-Am where there are 3-4 drivers depending on the race there are guys who pay for the ride and usually each car has one driver who is paid (because he is fast and will keep the rest of the team competitive). The age of the paid driver is irrelevant if he/she is fast, after all your 'teammates' will likely be aging successful doctors/lawyers/businessmen anyway. But of course, if you bring your own sponsorship and get paid by them rather than getting paid by the team, then you have a job (career may be a stretch) in auto racing. You can start in F2000 in SCCA and perhaps even the pro series if you have the proper licensing (schools and/or SCCA national license) but would recommend starting in a wingless class to get experience with car control and setup development before the comfort of wings come in to play.
