How can I get research experience outside the college setting?

I want to quit my job and get involved in some research/learning experience. What are my options in India?

  • I am currently working as a Software Developer in a highly reputed company which pays heavy money, but I don't see any value addition. I don't have any past research experience. I graduated from reputed college with high GPA. How can I get into academic research in the field of computer science?  My ultimate goal is to pursue MS/PhD in a top US university, but I don't see any point in continuing with job.

Aim to get into IISc as a Research Associate. Being from a Computer Science background, you can apply to many departments primarily, CSA, SSA and SERC. Though you may apply to other departments under professors working in area related to software development. In IISc, you can go to any class and attend with a simple verbal permission from the instructor. Also, the research experience will be world-class. If you work hard, you will get excellent recommendations along with a couple publications which will make your application competitive. For a flavour of research at IISc look at the following.

Give GRE and TOEFL as a first step. It would help to get opportunities for a research institute. meanwhile start applying to reputed institutes for research assistant / research trainee . It would enhance the exposure you need to get into the field.

Given that you already have a lot of industry experience you might want to have a look at this : http://www.iitm.ac.in/content/recruitment . I am still a student so you should obviously take what I have put here with the pinch of salt that I might not really know much. From what I have seen getting a Research Assistant type role will really help you in figuring out if you really want to do research. However, if you are already set on research then what the other answers say seems to make the most sense

I have currently given my company a resignation notice for job. My reasons are exactly same as yours. As you said you don't have any previous research experience, my suggestion is that you stay at home and do the following. 1. Refresh your courses again. 2. Learn new subjects in CS depending on your interest in research. 3. Get trained yourself in higher mathematics. 4. Look into good universities and start satisfying their admission                 requirements. 5. Attend seminars/talks in reputed institutions.
