Like anything, the better you take care of it the less you will have to work on it. There are things that you will have to do as a snowmobile owner to keep it running good. You will have to change the slides, belt, and carbides, usually only once every season or so. These really depend on how much, where you ride, and snow conditions. You will have to have to fog it at the end of the season, unless you take it to a dealer to do it. The other thing you will have to do is grease the suspension and jackshaft after every 500 miles or so. All of these things take minimal time to do. Carbides, belt changes, and greasing take about 15 minutes a piece to do. Slide changes take the longest at about 1.5 to 2 hours. Fogging takes about 20 minutes. So if you are willing to do and take care of these minor things, go for it. Since you live in Colorado, a Polaris RMK would be a good choice if you plan on doing a lot of deep powder riding. If you plan on sticking to groomed trails, go to a short track. Although you could look at a Ski Doo, They have 136" track models that would work well on powder as well as groomed trails. Some people, say, that you will be working on it, more, than, riding it. I have heard the same things. But, in my opnion,I think, the older sleds, are still more reliable. true, they may not be as fast, as you want, but, they get you where you want to go, better, than the new ones will. The newer sleds, are faster, yes, but, in the deep snow, the faster sleds, tend to want to bog down, getting you stuck, in the middle of no where. Also, most newer sleds, are oil injected, so, if the oil pump quits, for whatever reason, you are stranded, again. You can, however, still mix the oil, with the gas, like the old ones, if you are somewhere, where, you can get snowmobile oil. Another thing, is the suspension... Almost all have slide suspension, today. Which is nice, for a smooth ride, But, you can't run the sled, once the snow gets down, to a certain level. The slides, are made of plastic, and, the snow, running over them, keeps them cool, and lubricated, as well. Not enough snow, will burn up the slides, resulting, in costly repairs. Where as the older sleds, had a bogie type suspension. These were like little wheels, inside of the track, that, the track was supported by, and, also, where some of the suspension was as well. You could run the bogie type suspension, on bare grass, or dirt, and, not worry about hurting anything, unlike the slide suspension. In fact, we used to have grass drags, with our old sleds. Basically, we would go, from point A to point B. Whoever reached point B, first, was the winner. Also, a older sled, will not cost you a arm and a leg, either. You can pick up a older sled, for as little, as $500. I just picked up a 1985 Yamaha Phazer, 485c.c with dual carbs, electric start, hand warmers, speedometer, tachometer, and it fires up, on the second pull, every time. Or, with the starter, a turn of the key, and, it is running. This sled may be older, but, it is very reliable, indeed. Although, it does have slide suspension, and, oil injection, it all works very well, still. I just went on a 80 mile round trip snowmobile ride, with it. It didn't even use a half a tank, of injection oil. If you can find one, I would go for a Yamaha Phazer. They are plenty fast. And, actually, quite good, in the deep snow, as well.
