    Well I board in Colorado and I would imagine its much colder here then Tennessee. But you should get some thermal wear, thats pretty crucial. Hat, warm gloves, wool socks. You could wear a hoodie or something UNDER a water proof jacket if you have one. You don't want to wear only a hoodie because it will get wet and you will be miserable. Water proof pants are essential as well. I have never tried any methods you mentioned but I'm sure it wouldnt hurt to practice your balance. My biggest piece of advice is to not be afraid to fall! Just go for it and be committed. Watch other people, it helps. Good luck.
