It's my first attempt at snowboarding and I have the option to go to: Kirkwood Alpine Meadows Squaw Valley or Heavenly Which would be the best for a beginner?

Answer:
I asked this very question almost exactely a year a go and can give you some good input... We went to Squaw Valley for our Honeymoon and loved it...Huge mountain a little something for everyone and the trams, lodges, village are all fantastic!! I would not recommend Heavenly as there are lots of flat traverses that skiers don't mind, but it SUCKS for boarders.... Kirkwood is more backcountry oriented, great if you like to hike and be on rugged terrain... Alpine Meadows looked really nice and we stopped and looked around in the parking lot... However overall I don't think you can go wrong with Squaw ...its FANTASTIC!! Plus the beginner section is awesome, and you are right in the middle of the action...the beginner runs are actually on top of the mountain, you take a tram to get to it...You would 100% love Squaw!!

GO TO KIRKWOOD its 100000000000000 times better than Heavenly. I like it much better than Northstar and Squaw You need to be ready for a challenge, mostly blacks and doubles it gets crazy snow there, twice as much as heavenly you need to get to the back of the mountain and take sunrise (lift). I could do that same lift all day long. The bowls there are ridiculous. best boarding of my life. however the parks suck so if you are looking to do parks don't go. but be prepped for some of the best powder of your life. also if you like bars on the chair lifts, this may not be the place for you either. Also make sure to hit the tow-rope that is NOT off of sunrise. It is as close to heli-dropping in AK as you will get.

I have never been to Squaw, but I have been to the other 3. I actually don't care for Heavenly very much. It's beautiful, but it's very expensive. It's also annoying to navigate and you spend a lot of time traversing flat trails between runs, which is easier for skiers than boarders. Kirkwood is really great, but it's the furthest away from South Shore, where most people stay. alpine Meadows is probably the best priced of the 4, and is a great mountain, so it would get my vote. Sierra-at-Tahoe is also a great place to go
