The "good" season runs from the start of December to the end of March in Oregon (I'm pretty sure, I'm from Colorado and it's dryer and colder here, and the season is longer). But you can also ski in November, April, and at least here you can ski in May and June. So short, answer, you have to wait til xmas time. When that starts up, you can go to Mt Hood Meadows, which is just fine for a beginner. It's an hour away from Portland, so just go for the day, you'll be exhausted the following day. There you can rent your board and boots, and get a lesson (which you'll want). From my little bit of research here, it looks like $60 for snowboard and boot rental, 2 hour lesson, and lift ticket. I think you'll want more than just a 2 hour lesson though, but I'm sure they offer all-day lessons. It can be a kind of expensive sport to get into, but well worth the money. I ski 50 times a season at usually 9 or 10 areas, and I only pay around $300 a year, because I have all of my gear, while some tourists may come here and spend $300 on 4 days of skiing.
