Why is it so hard to use PayPal?

I have an e-commerce site. Why do so many people use PayPal?

  • I've never liked using PayPal and when I launched my own e-commerce site, it was easy to offer payments both via credit cards and PayPal. Today about 1/3 of payments come via PayPal and I still get frustrated with how cumbersome it is. What do people like about it?

A lack of trust AND/OR for convenience sake. Paypal gives them a level of protection greater than directly providing you their credit card number. AND/OR People have "account fatigue." Meaning they don't want to remember another username and password to setup a tertiary account for your website given they are unlikely to shop from you as a frequent habit.

It is because people don't trust the merchants in general. (Of course you trust a company if it has 25 years of existence, but you wouldn't trust the "Sam's shoe store". Paypal allows you to do that. Digital wallets are like a virus. Once you are infected, there is no turning back :) "Do you accept paypal ? " "Why don't you accept paypal" ? etc :)

Not everyone has a credit card, so it makes it convenient to pay. For website owners, it allows you to accept payment without an expensive merchant account.

If a user pays $50 by paypal can you charge $100? No. With a credit card you could. I am surprised why not everybody use paypal. Credit cards are so insecure for the user side.
