Should I buy Figure Skates if I don't skate often yearly? What are the pros and cons of buying skates?

So, I only skate maybe 5 times a year. Rentals are expensive! I probably already spent enough money (over years and years and years ) on rentals to buy myself 14 pairs of figure ...show more

Answer:
If rentals are so expensive, why not buy your own? You don't even have to buy an expensive pair since it sounds like you're just doing it recreationally. Maybe you'll even end up skating more since you won't have to spend money on rentals every time you go. Your own skates will also fit you better too. Most sport shops and rinks offer sharpening. I've been skating in figure skates and hockey skates for 14 years, and I don't know if anyone that has sharpened my skates is technically an expert, but it ends up fine. You won't even have to sharpen them much since you don't go often. And storing skates is not hard at all. Just make sure they're dry when you do, and store them in a dry place otherwise your blades could get really rusty. I really don't see any con to buying skates. Unless you buy them and then end up never going again, but even then you could just sell them.

Pros- New skates are much more comfortable than rentals because rinks usually buy the bargain ones to save money. Its easier to skate when you have your own skates because you can control when they're sharpened- rinks don't get to sharpen their skates often. If you like looking good- new skates are the best! There's not much care involved in putting them away for a long time, you just have to wipe them off after you skate and sharpen them about every 2 months. Cons- They can be expensive depending upon your size, but actually less expensive than renting skates every time. There's just a little bit more care involved with owning skates, but your skates will be fine if you just wipe them off! Since the skates have never been worn compared to the rentals, they might take a while to break into considering you don't skate often, but after you break into them they're much more comfortable than rentals!! Hope I helped!
