Answer:
Many rinks offer learn-to-skate classes that you can take, which may include classes for teens/adults. Chances are that you would start on the easiest level class, and work your way up. For your early level classes, if you don't have decent skates, you could use the rentals that the rink provides. However, if you decide that you want to continue on with skating beyond the basic levels, then you will want to get a decent pair of skates that will allow for you to jump and spin. Your class coach can give you recommendations. In addition, it is highly recommended to start taking private lessons when you hit the Freestyle levels, or even sooner. It just depends on how ambitious you are. I started taking private lessons as an adult just after I passed my first class skating test. As for practicing, that is up to you and how much time you can afford to spend at the rink. With the basic levels, you can work on your moves during many of the public skating sessions. With me, I go as often as I can. Sometimes, it's only 6 hours a week, sometimes, it's 10 or more. My best suggestion here is to find a decent schedule for when to go skating, and try to stick to it as much as possible. Then, when you are at the rink, really do practice for a good chunk of the time. It's totally fine to just skate around with friends, but you will need to spend time focusing on the quality of your skating. Basically, if you are serious about your skating, and are willing to put in the effort, you will improve fairly quickly. I started taking adult classes last year, barely being able to do a one foot glide. However, I worked hard enough to pass of my class skating tests on the first try, and now starting to work on my first jumps and spins. So, if I can learn to learn to learn to skate in my 30s, you can definitely do it while in your teens. :)
