How can I learn to figure skate?

  • Answer:

Too old? Nah! Adults are skating in record numbers. Skating's no more considered "Just for kids." Check out your nearest rink for Group lessons, and enroll. If Groups already started you may have to wait until the next semester (they usually run 7-9 weeks, depending on the rink, and the skating director). You'll probably be placed in a Beginner Group (either Basic 1, under Learn To Skate, United States Figure Skating) or under the ISI program (International Skating Institute). Your rink will be under one of those programs. Good luck; welcome to the world of figure skating!

My mother started at 46. Several people I know started in their 50's or even 80's. Many adults started in their 30's and they can do double jumps and amazing spins. Johnny Weir, Olympian, started at 12. I started at 12 and was doing doubles two years later. You're not all that likely to go to the Olympics or anything. But you can still go on to land axels, double axels, maybe even triple salchows. And you'll definitely be able to do graceful things like spirals, camel spins, and Ina Bauers. You might get stuck in a group lesson full of kids, it just depends on how many teenagers in your area get a whim to take lessons. You have an advantage at your age- teenagers listen better, work harder, and are more able to understand the coach. Teenagers are also at the optimum age to safely do off-ice strengthening. You can aim to compete as high as possible, or do all the tests, or even become a coach. Coaching is the best career there is. You get to spark lifelong loves in little skaters and you are a role model and second mother to many, many skaters. Nobody is ever too old to begin figure skating.

No, you are not too old to learn. Find an ice rink not too far from your home and sign up for figure skating lessons there.
