You don't need a whole lot of flexibility to figure skate. That's a misconception that probably got started with trend of skate grabbing and Sasha Cohen. Normal range of motion that the average person has is pretty much sufficient for all the basic moves and positions except for maybe layback spins and spread eagles. You should still stretch regularly; you just don't have to become a contortionist. As for falling, if you want to learn you're going to have to fall. I've noticed that people who fall a lot tend to progress faster than people who rarely fall. Also you're more likely to get hurt if you're overly cautious and trying too hard to save yourself from falling rather than just relaxing when going down. I skate on bad ice about half the time. One rink has pits. The other has bumps. Sometimes they're covered by an inch of water. When the compressor goes, sometimes the ice is so thin that pipes are almost exposed. Other times the surface resembles a snowy road that's been plowed over with ruts everywhere. You just have to deal. As for hockey, that just depends on what you like better.

you should do skating! Ive done skating since i was about 4 and im 13 now. skating is of course a difficult skill to master. flexibility is not a huge issue. first i would just go skating to earn a lot of balance becuase skating is a lot about balance. public skating ice is very bumpy. my lessons at my rink are not bumpy at all. evev when i travel for competitions the ice is very smooth.

when i started skating i wasnt flexible either but now i can do the splits!! its just something that you have to work on on your own and you DONT have to be flexible to skate...my coach couldnt do the splits but she had a flexible back and she had really good high jumps so other things will make up for not being flexible!! and as far as afraid of falling goes just dont think about it when your jumping...thats what i do!! but you will fall and sometimes it dose hurt but its just all part of the expierence and some people where butt pads,i have seem people wear bubble wrap on there knees, butt,,hands so there are plenty of thing that you can use to prevent it from hurting as bad!!! good luck :))
