When to start ice dance?

When to start ice dance?

  • When am I done with enough basics to start leaning towards ice dance? Do I have to switch to ice dance blades right away?

  • Answer:

For ice dance, I started exactly 2 years ago, when I was working on Juvenile field moves. My coach made me start to improve my flow and everything, and I really liked it. It was really easy for me up until the pre-silver dances. I've passed 22 dance tests, essentially, in the past two years. (Solo and partner testing, but the same dance, so 11 dances). You only need progressives and swing rolls and strong edges for the Dutch Waltz, the first dance. Once you learn those, I guess you could start, but it will be pretty difficult for you. It may be better to wait awhile. Also, you don't need ice dance blades. Riley, another answerer on here, is a Junior level ice dancer, and I think she has dance blades, but any lower level than that, and you don't need them. The skater that comes to my city every few months to partner dance tests has passed all but two International dances, and he doesn't even have dance blades.

Other answers

For Ice Dance, I started after I passed my pre-preliminary moves in the field. You need to have a strong foundation, but you can really start whenever you want. Also, you don't need dance blades unless you are HIGHLY competitive. I'm talking Junior/Senior.
