Can I have some tips for a double axel?

Double axel tips?

  • I consistantly land my double axel on the toe fully rotated and then fall. It feels like im stuck there with my foot in front and falling just comes naturally. I sometimes land them ...show more

  • Answer:

This is a really common problem at my rink. I think your reaching for the ice on your landing. So stay completely upright and perpendicular to the ice. Dont bend towards the ice and reach down like your going to fall. If you fall, you fall, but dont reach for the ice and throw away a jump. Off ice: (Im assuming you can do a double loop) Do double loops and practice staying tall and upright and checking out on those. If you can do your double axel off ice. (please dont do it on concrete, believe the scrapes youll get are not fun) On ice: Harness fun! Become new best friends with the harness. However dont get too clingy, or youll get dependent on it.

If you have a harness at your rink you can ask your coach to put you on it to help get the feeling of landing the jump. You could practice off ice double axels and vertical jumps into a check out position. Also, try to think about being really straight in the air.
