How do I balance school and figure skating?

Why isn't figure skating a school sport?

  • Hi! So, I am a Freeskate 4 figure skater and I was wondering, why figure skating isnt a school sport. At my school, they offer ice hockey and skiing. Like really, SKIING and not ...show more

  • Answer:

I'm in the same boat; my school has a hockey team and a ski and snowboard team. I think the reason that most places don't offer figure skating is that you can't compete for your school; you have to compete for your club. Where I live, they have CISAA finals for every sport, but not figure skating. I'm not sure about the rules within your city/state/province/school board, but I expect that it's something similar. Not enough schools would be able to have figure skating 'teams' to make those special competitions worth while. It sucks, but there it is. You could try to talk to your principal about starting a synchro team; with a synchro team, it may be possible to compete. It never hurts to ask.

I think that it also has to do with the funding your school allocates to the sports programs. You need to get a student-parent group together and bring this up at your local School Board/District open meeting. Do not be surprised if this will be a "bridge to nowhere idea" at first. If you really rally and get enough public support -- you (or whomever comes after you) will ultimately skate during school!

take this from me, because I tried starting a club at my high school. it is not a school sport because there aren't usually enough skaters. i'm from the east coast, and skating is popular, but not where i live. there used to be high school clubs that competed for each other and you represented your school, but the lady in charge stepped down. so every year, we do a school skating show for people all around the area. some schools still have a club just because it was created before this lady retired. however, i had no success starting a club at my school, because i am the only skater there, and i'm actually the only skater in my town, and i live in a big town. so there really is no point unless you have enough people to represent the school or compete from the state. if my club were created, i would have needed to travel to massachusetts or michigan to compete. hope i helped and if you need anything, email me on my profile page.

Hi! Exactly!!! I love figure skating, but my school doesn't offer it! They give dance, hockey, swimming, athletics, basketball, football, tennis, badminton literally everything but ice skating! If you create a figure skating club, I bet tons of people will go there! But how will you do that? Maybe you could arrange people to meet up with you in a specific ice rink? Or create a website and post on it a date and ice rink for you and all the other figure skating fans to meet up and skate with each other? Good luck!
