Where do I start with skiing?

I made an agreement with my friend, and told her she could teach me to ski or snowboard. I honestly have no idea where to start, what to buy, etc. Should I ski or snowboard..or ...show more

Answer:
Im 14 and have been skiing for 11 years. I tried snow boarding and if you enjoy falling and rails then pick the snow board! With skis you can go on harder hills and off road trails plus once you get good you can do some sweet tricks that are much easier to land, and if you skate it can help you skate ski up steeper parts. On the lift with a snowboard you have to undo a binding and re do it on the lift! pretty hard, now in long term - Skiing lasts for life (can you imagine your grandparent snowboarding? ... no. skiing.... yes) So from a veteran skier i recommend you buy a pair of twin tipped skis and some poles (they will tell you not to use them but trust me its alot better with them.)

I am 13 and i have been skiing for 11 years.( Lol. almost the same as axxle or however you spell that. :)) and i totally agree with him. Skiing would be a much better choice if you are an ice skater. ( i am also an ice skater.) t will be easier to control if your feet are separated. A lot fo people say snowboarders are so much cooler than skies but i think its the other way around!!! on a snowboard, you always fall on your butt,u scrape the snow off the slopes until only ice is left( arggg!) and skiing is much easier to learn. Tricks are much easier on skies. ( trust me on that one:)) Also, loading the ski lift is less of a hassle. ( again, like axxle said). IN my opinion, snowboarding jackets are very ugly. Where are u planning on going to shop? because you have to find a good store. I would go to ski store and get companies columbia or north face if your not sure about sking and a beginner. When your sure you want to spend more money on ski clothes, you can get companies like Spyder, and Phenix. Good luck and i hope you pick skiing!

Start wherever you feel so inclined. Don't make a decision Board or Ski because of whats "cooler". Start with what you thinkyou'lll enjoy better. Then, go to a small family mountain, rent that particular "board" or "ski" and take group instruction with a mountain instructor. You may have a fully qualified friend, but lessons are best left to someone who works for the mountain! Ive been a ski instructor long enough to know that a mountain (its employers and "PR" guys) is more simpathetic to an injury sustained with a ski instructor than a "qualified friend". Then, dont give up first go! Keep trying. You may be bruised, but you've made progress. KEEP ON TRYING! Brad Killington Ski Instructor PSIA level II

If you value your friendship, take lessons from a qualified professional instructor, you will pay more attention to the lesson and learn faster. The close emotional tie with your friend will interfere with your learning curve. There should be a ski school at the area rent the equipment there and take a set of lessons. You should be riding the chair within a few hours and having fun with your friend. Take either board or ski lessons and enjoy yourself. As to what to buy, a weather resistant coat, snowboard pants, multiple thin layers of clothing, Also a pair of gloves and some goggles. A helmet is advised, take along a set of dry clothes in the pack. Your boots must fit tight around the foot and ankle, they are made with a sponge insert that will compress through the day so they will get looser. If you are staying at a resort for multiple days, take some dancing shoes, and a swimsuit for the hot tub. Do enjoy yourself, take lessons from a qualified professional instructor and save the friendship. I forgot, take money.

Skiing is easier to pick up, but harder to master. Snowboarding is way harder to pick up, but once you learn how to link your turns, its is pretty easy to progress. It is a much shorter learning curve. If you try snowboarding, prepare to spend the entire first day on your knees and your butt...and take soem Tylenol, because your body is going to take a beating. It is much easier to maintain your balance on skis, so it is more forgiving to the beginner. Someone on here said that snowboarding is way more expensive, Im still trying to figure ou the logic in that statement. You have to buy clothes either way. For skiing, for top of the line equipment, you are looking at about $900 for the skis, another $200 for the bindings, another $600 for the boots, and about $75 for the poles, for a grand total of about $1800. For snowboarding, you will need $500 for the board, $150 for the bindings, and $200 for the boots, for a total of $850. Lift tix cost the same for skis or boards.
