  • Answer:

I would recommend Taos New Mexico. It is a small, family owned ski resort well known for not messing around. Seriously, I've been to other resorts, and their idea of a double-black diamond is Taos's idea of a tough blue run. If you get there early enough in the season (it's usually good around Christmas), hit the slopes at the right time, and know where to ski (I would recommend asking some locals, who are usually identifiable by their shabby clothing and tendency to say "duuuuude"), you can get some AMAZING deep powder. As a side note, Al's Run (the long mogul run underneath chair 1) holds a record for sustained steepness. And if you want a truly extreme experience, you could always try hiking Kachina Peak. It's a grueling thirty-minute hike, but Kachina holds it's powder until pretty much the last day of the season.

I have a theory that the best powder (and longest lasting) is not at the famous resorts but at the next level down. At the famous resorts the powder gets skied out 28 milliseconds after the lifts open. I agree with the first answer that Utah is a great start, but instead of Snowbird look at places like Brighton, Solitude, Sundance or Powder Mountain.
