Assuming that you are skiing on groomed, downhill runs only, you should get alpine skis. For your first few seasons I would demo skis (basically renting them, but you get a nicer pair that are lightly used, and you get to take them home to skip rental lines, then you return them at the end of the season) until you figure out what your personal preference is. Brand wise, K2 and Atomic have some nice beginner to intermediate skis.A good rule of thumb: If you are looking at two different skis by the same company (a "good" company) and one is $400 more expensive, and you don't know the difference, the cheaper ones will be fine

Buying skis all depends on preferences. Since you said you have only been skiing for one year, I am assuming that you ski on groomed trails and do not need a high performance ski. Alpine skis and twin tips are the same skis only the twin tips you can ski backwards with. Cross country are skis used to go across flats and up hills with. A good trail riding ski that is light weight and forgiving is the Rossignol bandit. This is an extremely popular ski due to its versatility. This is a very good beginer ski. If you are planning to advance and start skiing in the trees or park or racing, there are better options for those. Also the K2 Apache series has lots of versatile skis. Don't forget about bindings if you buy skis. Check to see if the ones you are buying have bindings. If they do make sure they can fit your boot size. If not then make sure that the brake width is wide enough for the ski.

look online on the various ski company websites. many have a "ski chooser" which will match you to a few sets of skis depending on your ability and where you like to ski. cross country skis are not for downhill skiing! twin tips are for park and pipe, doing tricks and stuff, but now some more all mountain skis are going as twin tips. (benefit is skiing switch). your best bet is going in to talk with a ski professional at a store... they know how to choose what ski is best.
